Capts Report Oct 2005

From the “groaning” cockpit. ( October 2005)

Besides my usual moans about attendance at Monthly Games and prize-giving, I really need to scratch my head to find something to moan about this time !! I do however wish to criticise the ‘non interest’ and apathy shown towards anything other than our monthly games. I am speaking about Golforama and away games. Both of these are very very important aspects of our commitments to Nomads, and should be seen as one of our (I know lesser liked) duties to our aims and objects in the furtherance of golf, and our commitment to charity.
Except for our usual stalwarts (thanks guys!), the turn out is very embarrassing and disappointing. Maybe some of us should rethink why we belong ? Is it just to be able to play at the more exclusive clubs at a reduced price? And give nothing in return?

Our Andrew Mentis day went off very well despite the very poor turnout of Nomads( again the Nomads turnout was a disappointing 52 out of 176 players) Our congratulations to Joe van Wyk, our Vice Captain, for a well run and successful day. The proceeds will go a long way to alleviating the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves.

The SAA SA OPEN is just around the corner guys, and I appeal to all of us to please volunteer for this very important tournament. We are about 27 assistants short at this stage. The dates are 15 to 18 December.
Please contact either myself or Flats if you are able to assist. Your travelling expenses will be covered and food and drink will be supplied.

AND, another appeal, I am short of about 7 players for our Nationals to be held in Gauteng from 26th March to Friday 31st March. We received an allocation of 25 slots, and we have only filled 18 so far. The NEW ruling is that you only need to be a Nomad for ONE (1) year to qualify ( not 2 , as in the past). The closing date is end November. Come on guys !!

Our Monthly game at Knysna went off very well with a field of 90, (81 Nomads !!!!) This is about a 50% turnout – shocking!!!???
The weather and course were both excellent. Our apologies for some of the (in some people’s view) poor prizes, but as we had no sponsor, the club itself did the sponsoring.
Our gratitude to the Knysna Club and its staff for their usual cooperative and friendly assistance.

I would like to make mention of our “silent, in the background” Nomad. Our treasurer , Darrel Nunns.
Guys, for the first time in National Nomad’s history, our pro forma balance sheets and finances were presented to the National Treasurer 2 weeks BEFORE the starting date when he called for these !! What an achievement !
Well done Darrel ! We all owe you big time for looking after our finances so well. In your own silent reticent way, you may think that most of us take you for granted, BUT, don’t for one minute think that you go unnoticed and unappreciated. Thanks again, my dear friend.!!

Guys, we are coming to the end of the year, and our next game on Sunday 20 November at Mossel Bay is also our Annual General Meeting, when new office bearers are elected. Please, Please try to attend this important game and meeting. If you have anybody in mind that you would wish to propose to stand on the committee, please do so via our secretary, Austin Graves (another behind –the-scenes, fantastically dedicated Nomad, whose toils may seem to go unnoticed , but not unappreciated by those who care and know), or any committee member.

Thanks guys

Hoping to see you all at Mossel Bay

This fund raising day was held at the George Golf Club on Sunday 9th October, and proved to be a success. We had a field of 180 players during the day, and the competition was our normal Nomads Medal Stableford, but played off club handicaps.

We experienced a hole-in-one on the day. This achievement was by none other than our roving doctor, Flats Huisamen. Well done !
