AGM November 2005

CAPTAINS REPORT to the 20th AGM at Mossel Bay ( 20 November 2005)

Fellow Nomads

I thank you for granting me the honour and privilege of being your captain for the past year. I found it both enlightening and extremely pleasurable. It has also been a very active year with 4 anniversaries to attend, namely our own, Western Province, Gauteng and Border. I was also fortunate enough to attend our own Nationals in Cape Town with a full compliment of players, the Zimbabwe Nationals at Victoria Falls, and the Southern Challenge at Margate on the South Coast, accompanied by 23 of our members. At home, we hosted the all important Seaboard Trophy at Goose Valley, which coincided with us being honoured with the official visit of our National Chairman, Gary Bray., the South Easter trophy at Pezula, as well as the Boland Challenge at Still Bay. The good news is that of all these we only managed to win the South Easter against Eastern Cape - I reiterate that I am the captain who leads from behind !!

From this, it can be noted that I also attended all the Management meetings as well as the Nat. Executive meetings, also accompanied by our Vice Captain , Joe Van Wyk and our JVC , John Richards.

Andrew Mentis Fund
Congratulations to our Vice Captain, Joe van Wyk, for running a very successful Andrew Mentis Day at George. We are proud to announce that we upped last years contribution to our worthy causes by R 5000, bringing the total up to R 40 000. To be distributed to Emmaus and Moreson with R 20 000 each

We attained this higher figure by also having a special open day at Oubaai. I would like to thank Oubaai for affording us this privilege.

Junior Golf

We once again were able to present a cheque of R 15 000 to Junior Golf ( as seen today), thanks to our sales of Bell’s tickets. Our Junior golfers, I am pleased to announce, are doing exceedingly well, and our congratulations to Heine Dixon, as their Chairman, and the committee, as well as the youngsters themselves. It makes our efforts rewarding, and we are therefore proud to be able to contribute in some small manner to the furtherance of golf in our region.

Sponsors
The unsung heroes are, of course, our sponsors. Without them we could and would not be the organisation that we are. Guys, we must try our best to support these very worthy and generous instances Our sincerest and heartfelt gratitude to all of them for their magnanimity.

And ,at the same time, our gratitude must also be conveyed to all the Golf Clubs and their committees and members in the Southern Cape, for allowing us the use of their facilities to attain our goals.

I am pleased to announce that Oubaai and Pinnacle Point will from 2006 be included as home courses in our annual circuit. We are really privileged and honoured to have these included in our fixture list, and I would like to request our members to continue to uphold our reputation by showing all our courses, and their officials, the respect they deserve.

Membership:
Our membership status is as follows;

Ordinary 133, including 13 founder members

Associate members 22

Honorary members 4

Sponsor members 3

Inactive members 6 (incl. Leave of Absence members)

Which brings our total to 168 membe rs and we have 15 Wait listed members

I am proud to state that I have had the privilege of inducting no fewer than 25 new Nomads this year, and would like to welcome them wholeheartedly, and also remind them to study their obligations and responsibilities that they have undertaken to uphold, by joining our wonderful organisation.

Most of these have contributed to reducing our average age by about 40 years !!

Unfortunately we have also had 4 resignations, and then even more unfortunately we lost a few more members. due to them not meeting their commitments. I am also sad to say that even more members will be lost in the coming few months, due to not meeting our required number of committed games, as well as due to not paying their annual dues in time. We have had instructions from the National Executive that we are not applying these criteria strictly enough, and therefore we are compelled to abide by these rules.

We justifiably honoured Jeff Clause by giving him Honorary Membership, Well done Jeff

No report of mine would be complete without my usual groan, so I also need to add that the commitment to Nomads, of some our members, fortunately not all, leaves much to be desired. These members do not like to travel, and when it comes to Golforama, they seem to forget that this is one of our major responsibilities to the Nomads organisation. It should not be necessary, after sending numerous appeals to all the members via e-mail etc., to still have to telephone each individual to enquire as to their availability. And this applies equally to our away and home tournaments.

Newsletter
Our newsletter this past year, in most cases, arrived timeously and well done. However, due to very high costs, the committee felt it prudent to resort to an alternate system. Our thanks to John Richards for trying out the “blogspot” system. This is a much cheaper alternative to a website, and works just as well. From now on, we can access our site to bring us up to date with our news etc. Please make use of this method in future.

Financials
When I think of financials, the predominant factor that springs to mind is, don’t fear, Darrel is near.

He is synonymous with our good financial status and the running thereof.. Darrel, we as Southern Cape Nomads, are forever indebted to you for your commitment and dedication to your portfolio as treasurer. I salute and thank you for this, as well as the manner in which we worked together , and your support of me. Immediately hereafter Darrel will personally present his impeccable report to us all.

Our Pink Ladies

I have repeatedly extolled their dedication and hard work, and I will continue to do so. Without these beauties, we could not run our Games in the smooth, efficient and above all, friendly way in which they are.

Girls, my sincerest thanks to all of you, and, may I add, that I would also like to thank your husbands, cousins, or boyfriends for lending you to us from time to time.

Committee
Whatever I say, cannot express my gratitude sufficiently. So, would the following please be upstanding;

Past Captain ; Flats Huisamen

Vice Capatain Joe van Wyk

Junior Vice Captain John Richards

Honorary Secretary Austin Graves

Treasurer Darrel Nunns

Match Secretary Berti Harris

Equipment Graham Williams

Away Games Stan Fry

Pro Gerald Anderson (apologies)

Guys and Doll !!, Thank you wholeheartedly for your loyal and constructive support. Without all of you, I could not have managed my captaincy the way I did. Thank you again, and I applaud all of you.

I would like to extend a special word of thanks to my lovely Match Secretary, Bert.

Sweetheart, you have always supported me in all my undertakings, and never more so than in this past year

Thank you again.

General

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank ‘our soon to be’ National Chairman, Kenny Haldane for all his sound advice and apologise for disturbing him with so many calls at all hours. Kenny, I, and all in the Southern Cape, are very proud of you, and wish you and Paddy all the best for your year in office. You can rest assured that we will always support and assist you whenever called upon.

My thanks also to all the members for their support during my year of office, and especially all those stalwarts who always answered my call for assistance.

Congratulations to my successor and his new committee, and wishing them a very successful year. They can be assured of my continued support and loyalty to both them and our wonderful organisation.

Thank you all once again

Boland Challenge

Although Boland like to call this the Southern Challenge, not realising that we already have the Southern Challenge against S Natal.

Yep, Yep Yep, your captain has gone and done it again – LOST again – by a meagre . 13 of a point !!
Never-the- less, a loss is a loss. A mitigating factor is that we had 30 odd players against their 14 players, which immediately puts the favour their way, as we take the average score per players per side, and thus the larger the split, the more it favours the smaller team.
Enough !, we lost.!!

Our JVC , John Richards, recommended that maybe I should remain as captain for another year, just so that I could have another chance to redeem my tarnished record.??!!- this did not make me feel any better !

A large thank you to Mark Ward-Able and his committee, for allowing us the privilege to play on their course. The day turned out to be a huge success, enjoyed by all, especially the Nomadic camaraderie , which is ever present.

I had the privilege of playing with Mark ( Still Bay’s Captain), Alfie Duncan, (Boland Captain) and Tom de Kock, the Still Bay President. What a gas.
Alfie arrived without a winks sleep the previous night,- and he looked it, and proceeded to pick up his ball on the very first green, while still having a 5 inch putt for a point – he could not count !! After much laughter and ribbing, I proceeded to do the same on the par 5 , 7th hole. You can imagine the bollocking I got !! (after S-----g all over Alfie on the 1st – I was his partner !!) Suffice it to say , we lost everything, including the press !

If you guys think I chirp a lot on the course, wait till you play with Alfie. I come a poor second.
After expecting rain all day, we fortunately (only for the players), did not have a drop, - a beautiful day.

My thanks and compliments to Flats Huisamen for organising a well run tournament, and to our own Match Secretary, Berti, who sacrificed a full day to assist Flats with taking the entry fees and doing the score cards after the game.

Our gratitude also to Graeme Robb, from Timber City, who sponsored the day’s prizes, as well as to the Boland team who also donated a few prizes.
Harry “Rondevoet” de Villiers, Mario Jonker and Fanie du Plessis did the braaing, which went down very well. Thanks guys.
All in all, a lovely day, and thank you to all our Nomads who supported us.

From your Captain

Tannah (Lost Forever) Harris
